December 1999: Pen and Colored Pencils.

Explanation: Ruben (pictured with his back to us) is a very artistic person, having written and directed multiple plays. After arriving home to find that Ivy has cleaned his apartment (again), he scolds her for piddling her time away on things that don’t matter, saying she should be writing stories. She claims she cannot write, and he insists that there are stories to tell all the same. Ivy believes acting out her stories is enough. (From THTIB #4, chapter 1)

IVY TRIVIA: Though many people find this practice disconcerting, Ivy prefers sitting in the air to sitting in a chair. Many people have asked her if that doesn’t take some degree of concentration, but she replies that keeping things up is easy–“like holding a shopping bag,” she says. “You have to keep holding onto the bag so you don’t drop it, but keeping your hand holding it is no big deal.”
