Caption: “It looks like crystal but . . . it’s water, ain’t it?”

Explanation: On Ivy’s second day in Ridgefield, she and Nina play with a bubble of water Ivy has collected from the rain-drenched tree. Behind them, children play on a sandcastle Ivy created while she was bored waiting for Nina.

IVY TRIVIA: When Nina’s principal, Mrs. Thompson, saw Ivy’s sandcastle, she thought it wasn’t real. She demanded that Ivy get rid of it, and Ivy just looked at it and it crumbled . . . and that was when she actually began to believe that everything she’d seen so far had not been a trick or some kind of elaborate scam. From that point on, she was no longer just suspicious; she was angry and afraid. Well after Ivy stopped coming to Nina’s school, Mrs. Thompson kept thinking she saw her on the campus.
